The General Ability Test (GAT) is Paper 2 of the National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). This paper evaluates a candidate’s general knowledge, English proficiency, and awareness of current affairs. It carries a total of 600 marks and consists of 150 multiple-choice questions, to be completed in 2.5 hours. The paper is divided into two sections: English (200 marks) and General Knowledge (400 marks). The GAT plays a vital role in the final merit ranking and requires a well-rounded preparation strategy.
The English section is designed to test the candidate’s understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension. Topics include spot the error, fill in the blanks, synonyms and antonyms, idioms and phrases, sentence improvement, ordering of words and sentences, and reading comprehension. The aim is to assess the candidate's command of the language, their ability to use it effectively in both written and spoken forms, and their grasp of basic grammar rules.
The General Knowledge section covers a wide range of subjects. In Physics, topics include basic principles and laws, motion, force and energy, gravitation, work and power, sound and light, heat, electricity, magnetism, and general properties of matter. In Chemistry, the syllabus consists of physical and chemical changes, elements and compounds, acids, bases and salts, atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical equations and reactions, metals and non-metals, and properties of air and water.
General Science includes topics from biology such as human body systems, growth and reproduction in plants and animals, health and hygiene, nutrition, and common diseases. The History section includes ancient, medieval, and modern Indian history, freedom movement, key leaders, and important events. In Geography, candidates are expected to understand physical features of the Earth, climate, soil and vegetation, important rivers and mountains of India, global geography, time zones, and economic and social geography.
Current Events is another important component, testing awareness of national and international news, important events in science and technology, sports, politics, arts, and culture. This section requires candidates to stay updated through newspapers and other current affairs sources.
Overall, the GAT paper is designed to assess a candidate’s holistic knowledge base and intellectual readiness for a career in the Armed Forces. Consistent reading, strong fundamentals, and regular practice are key to performing well in this section.
